For me photography is about the effects of light and chronicling those effects on an object(s) as a spiritual exercise. Light is almost universally a spiritual reference point and is used as a parallel, almost 300 times in the Old Testament and New Testaments.
My original interest in art was as a painter, usually with a surrealist bent and philosophically bent to surrealist ideals. Surrealism though, in its lighter expressions, is about the random meaningless and meanness of life. After a while, enthusiastically living and visualizing meaningless seemed to me to be a meaningless exercise, as did my life. I covertly set off in search some sort of meaning in life and found it right in front of me in the person, life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
While studying art, even though a Surrealist, I found my self drawn to painters such as Caravaggio, Vermeer, van Eyck, Degas and Edward Hopper. These artists depicted light in its luminous drama utilizing the technology of their time brilliantly. Photography in our time and particularly digital photography, has given us immense new and more democratic opportunities to follow in their footsteps.
