I've downloaded the latest 2.8x and 2.9x, but I still haven't played with either of them. I do want to experiment, because I've seen some really nice add-ons and tutorials that won't work in my 2.79, which will remain my "go to" Blender version for some time to come.

OK . . . Where's my chocolate?
2.80 was the last version that worked for me, until 2.92. For some reason, that works for me. I hope I'll be able to keep updating because it looks like more cool tools are on the way and I'm trying to be more serious about learning and using the software.

There are so many Daz Genesis figure & content import options for the newer version of Blender .
I understand if one s hardware is just too old but those who stay with older Blender version when they can actually run to newer builds are really missing out IMHO on the far superior native tools(rendering, modeling) as well as the many free Add-ons for using Daz content inside blender.
Oh I'd like to play with all the new and/or improved tools. My problem is not wanting to relearn the UI. I had to do that a decade or so ago when they came out with 2.5x and the new UI, as 2.4x versions didn't have what anyone now-a-days would call a UI.
I'll get around to it at some point, just not rushing to do it.

OK . . . Where's my chocolate?
I'm not going to say the UI isn't different, because it is. But coming from 2.79, it's not too bad, and many things are now out in the open. The shortcuts have changed, but there is an option to have Blender use the old ones. And IIRC, then you run the new version the first time, it asks which one you want to use. And IMHO, the new features are worth the effort to adjust.

It should have detected 2.8 and asked if you wanted to transfer your 2.8 settings upon the first launch.
If this doesnโt work you can transfer your settings manually: on a windows system open the explorer, go to your-username - AppData (maybe you first have to unhide hidden folders) - Roaming - Blender Foundation - Blender There you should find every blender version and a folder named config where your bookmarks.txt, startup.blend and userpref.blend etc. are stored. Just copy and paste these files.
It didn't. Why would it?
Not sure what happened in your case, however it is the normal behaviour of Blender to detect
previous versions and offer you the option of copying
settings/third part addons to the new install without harming the previous installation.
This is very convenient for those of us who heavily customize our Blender installs and use many third party addons.
of course the ability to have multiple version of Blender installed is a huge advantage because if some crititcal addon stops getting supported at certain version , you can not only maintain the older version to use the add-on but can always get installers of any previous version from the Blender website, when you migrate to new PC

That's exactly what I do with every new version of Blender.

I think we know another company that would come across as much more helpful if they made older versions of their software available for download.
I think I read, in a post, that "other company" has "relaxed" a little bit and will "turn a blind eye" and no longer prosecute private parties who wish to help a fellow user by sharing an older installer. Official tech support will only be provided for the latest public builds & official releases.
A sign of the times really. with all of the serious competition out there ( Reallusion & Epic MH), they DESPERATELY need to keep the content buyers/hoarders on board even if they are running older versions.

Yeah, but this is a new computer for me and I didn't have any of the older versions on this computer.

I have no intention of ever modeling the donut.
Huh? Everyone new to Blender does the Donut tutorial.
That and the white coffee cup when Cycles first appeared on the scene. No matter how I tried, even now with Denoising and 1000 samples, I still can't get the inside of the cup to render clean. ~shakes head~

@Eclarke1894 My advice is to focus on the areas that are most relevant to your primary reason for using Blender in the first place.
I personally found every version of Blender prior to 2.8 utterly unusable!!!
My first usage of 2.8+ was initially to migrate my custom clothing modeling for genesis in Maxon C4D, over to the Reallusion CC3 base figures with Blender. once that was achieved the other features of the new Blender came more naturally on a project by project basis.
I have seen your poser prop models and frankly you are already skilled far beyond bothering with that newbie "doughut" tutorial.
Pick something you want to make for Poser and go from there .. you will get productive rather quickly working on a real project instead of passively watching unrelated video tutorials. and feel free to post specific 2.9 modeling tool questions here ,in this forum, and we will get you the answers you need.

That is too funny, Miss B!
Oh I'm glad you find it funny Torq.
I feel your pain, Miss B!. I don't really understand the hotspots and noise that appear in PBR renders. Older scanline and raytrace renderers didn't do that. Arguably, one of the big advantages of sticking with 2.79b or earlier is that you still have access to the built-in Blender render engine, but PBR is all the rage. To that end, in this 2017 video, Blender Guru has some tips and tricks for speeding up your Cycles renders: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8gSyEpt4-60 It's 47 minutes long and Andrew speaks slowly, so you can safely speed up playback speed to 2x and turn on subtitles. That's how I watch more videos in less time. There are plenty of other speed up your render videos, but newer videos will refer to more current versions of Blender and the settings may have changed from what you're using. It's the way of things.
BTW, in case anyone is wondering, my initial problem with getting Blender to fire up was an error I kept getting having to do with OpenGL 3.3 and drivers not being up to date. A quick google posting the error message "a graphics card and driver with support for opengl 3.3 or higher is required. installing the latest driver for your graphics card may resolve the issue." I google the message and this and some other videos popped up. If you're having problems with Blender and getting this message, one of these videos MAY help you. I wish someone had posted this message back when 2.8 was first out. Or at least, if they did, that I had seen it.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bXVXGsQQNOI
Ah, yes. Those OGL drivers will bite you if not updated. Glad you got it resolved.
I agree with Wolf, no one needs to model the donut unless your goal is to provide prop models of unhealthy breakfast food. Then, you need to model one with a bite out of it. Here are the embedded videos from the last few posts:
I just rememberer we can do that here.

Yes, I like his videos, so thanks for the link. I don't like the fast videos some create, and usually have to slow them down in order to watch them.

I've already watched his video on speeding up Blender. It was some time ago. In fact, i think I posted about it, both in the Poser forum and on the defunct, SM boards. Of course, Andrew has his hands in a couple of onloine businesses now that actually deal with Blender, such as his texture site, Polygon, some other site, so i don't see his stuff as much as I used to.

I don't always, but with a video like this, with many good points, it pays to write down a quick note or two (or 9 or 10).

that video isn't about making a donut. It's about hows and whys to use various parts of blender. The donut is just the object he chose for people to try it out. He could have used a cake instead.

I actually did do the one with the donut. It was very helpful. Most of Andrew's videos are. He also did one for making an anvil and a rope. I'm not likely to be making a rope anvil or a donut anytime soon, but some of the methods he used can be applied to other projects, and letting you know that blender can do these things using those methods helps you become a better modeler overall.

I agree. I have notes, which I call Tidbits of Interest, for every piece of software I've ever used. For this particular video, however, it made sense to write them all (or most of them) down until I get used to the process of making my Cycles renders better. I just don't do final renders in Blender that often, so having the notes will definitely help.

@EClark1894 Did you find a fix for your problem? It looks like some sort of display error.
No, although it only seems to happen when the mesh object is selected or highlighted.

That's a problem! Must highlight the mesh to do any work on it. You could still be having a hardware issue, or you found a bug. You're using 2.92? I wonder if you would have the same result with 2.83 or so? That would at least tell if it's version-specific. Otherwise, I wonder if other people had the same problem? Would probably have to look in the Blender forums to find out. And then, you're wasting too much time trouble-shooting instead of doing work. It's never easy

I think I'll contact Blender.org and tell them the issue. But I took your suggestion and fired up 2.81 which I already had on my machine and it looks normal. No problems at all. But I'm going to download another version, and see what happens.

Cool! 2.81 was ok, 2.9 was not. I'll be interested to hear what happens at blender.org . I hope the problem is easily resolved for you.
