Subject: All digital content creators should wise up about NFT - not spam

infinity10 ( ) posted Tue, 23 March 2021 at 2:04 AM · edited Mon, 22 April 2024 at 4:30 AM

In my opinion, all digital content creators need to know about Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs).

My source for quotes is https://www.cnet.com/news/nfts-explained-these-pricey-tokens-are-as-weird-as-you-think-they-are/

"NFTs offer a blockchain-created certificate of authenticity for a digital asset such as an artwork, a piece of music or a video"

"An NFT is a unique digital token, with most using the Ethereum blockchain to digitally record transactions. It's not a cryptocurrency like Bitcoin or Ethereum, because those are fungible and exchangeable for another Bitcoin or cash. NFTs are recorded in a digital ledger in the same way as cryptocurrency, so there's a listing of who owns each one. What makes an NFT unique is the digital asset tied to the token. This can be an image, video, tweet or piece of music that's uploaded to a marketplace, which creates the NFT to be sold."

"The person who buys the NFT doesn't own the actual asset. "

"For example, the creator of the Nyan Cat meme sold an NFT of it for $590,000. The person who bought the token owns the token but doesn't actually own the meme. That still belongs to the creator, who held onto the intellectual and creative rights.

"What the owner of the token has is a record and a hash code showing ownership of the unique token associated with the particular digital asset. People might download Nyan Cat and use it on social media if they want, but they won't own the token. This also means they can't sell the token like the owner can. "

⭐Looks like some people may start mining digital images (or other digital creations) to associate with NFTs.⭐

Hard agree. I've voiced my grievances on their forums and it feels like you're yelling at a brick wall. What a dumb business decision to make, especially given the criticism of NFTs and blockchain in general.

Sadly, I suspect if Renderosity had an opportunity, they'd likely drink the NFT koolaid too. Hopefully, the negative blowback Daz is getting (plus Daz's firm support of harmful and environmentally destructive practices) has put off any sort of entertainment of the idea with TPTB over here.

With all the moderating going on, and removed forum posts of valid protest against the scam/ponzi nature of nfts, you'd figure users would migrate over here to have a more open discussion. But it looks like some are just simply walking away from the community completely. Its the beginning of the end.

I'm used to having my posts removed over there (one of the side effects of having strong opinions, lmao), but the rate they're trying to silence any legitimate criticism is terrifying, imho.

If nothing else, I really, really hope this means we'll see the resurgence of smaller online avenues to sell 3D assets for Daz (and other programs, for that matter). I just don't see this ending well at all, and tbf the talk of people stopping support of the Daz store -myself being one of them- will end up hurting the PAs that are caught in the fallout of all of this.

I can no longer post on the DAZ forum without approval but I still intend doing 3D art so will definitely be spending more money here in future. ?

Wendy, you must have really touched a nerve with them. I think for now, the decision-makers there have made up their minds to push the NFTs hard.

bbost ( ) posted Fri, 02 April 2021 at 8:17 AM

After some research and reading I know more about NFTs than before and they're still a drink the koolaid scam driven by speculation and greed built on 3 websites all owned by the same group of people. Certainly not there to help artists in any meaningful way.

it has absolutely nothing to do with what you post and everything to do with the moderation teams personal dislikes, another user they dislike made less than a handful of posts not saying much at all and suffered my fate, I promptly came here and bought something and made sure my PC+ subscription renewal was cancelled? then rendered and uploaded that silty anti NFT video to my channel with 31K subscribers, so if that is the outcome they are seeking they got it ?

They pulled it, but I reposted the key part without the inflammatory component. I saved the text so I could do that. It's not a surprise that the original got deleted. In some cases, it's surprising what's been allowed to stay! And you're right: That thread would be a lot longer if not for the heavy editing.

While i did express my discontent with all the NFT and how DAZ handle the issue it was not as much as i would have liked because i did not wanted to get all my post removed. Been suffering from that too, sometimes for strong opinions, sometimes for silly things; still not to the point that i'm been pre moderated. Toning it down or using carefully selected words are not the same. As i'm not native english it takes me a little more than normal the express myself, so it certailly is frustrating to elaborate a message and get it removed with a lame excuse. I have been given excuses outside the forum rules and been treated like i was at fault. Or they streech their own rules to the point of ridicule; like having a post removed for "discussing moderator actions" when all i said was to someone that was too close to "crossing a line" to be careful or the post/thread could be removed. In a any case, that moderation abuse that in general is bad but this case with NFTs was beyond reasonable, the price increases on bundles, the lame promos, the deceiving marketing and now the NFTs (including their own privacy policy violation sending mails for 3rd party products/promos) do make me look for alternatives in the store and also the community more seriously. Not because i don't like the community/people there, i don't like how it is moderated and the fact that while being so big DAZ still ignores it so much. Crossing my fingers other sites do not follow DAZ.

Art distribution in NFT format offers an extraordinary opportunity for artists to offer their works to their followers with guarantees of authenticity that cannot be obtained in traditional galleries such as DeviantArt, Behance, Artstation, etc. It is a system that allows the sale of works exclusively or in collections. It is also a very interesting way to commercialize video game assets. It not only allows creators to receive direct income from the sale of their art; they will also be able to receive passive income if their works are reselled in secondary markets.

I am glad that people are increasingly aware of environmental problems. Blockchains such as Bitcoin or Ethereum are PoW (Proof of Work) type and are highly polluting due to their high energy consumption. Avoid them. I think DAZ has made a mistake choosing an Ethereum-based platform. However, there are much greener blockchains, such as WAX Blockchain, type DPoS (Delegated Proof of Stake). In WAX you can find the market of NFTs with the highest number of users. As an artist I have published many illustrations as NFT in WAX. I have developed several applications for the WAX user community. I'm also developing a collectible card game in NFTs. I created the cards with DAZ Studio.

People settled in traditions are afraid of new features. I keep reading nonsense that can only come from people who don't know. Don't reject this technology just because you don't understand it. Maybe you're missing an opportunity to grow your artist career. I will be happy to help to get to know the NFTs ecosystem to all those who have doubts and want answers to their questions. I have tried to connect with the Renderosity team to offer them my technical advisory services so that they can install here, on this website, a market of NFTs at the service of the entire community of creators that we live here. A market for any of you to create and sell your illustrations, just as it is already being done, but with the advantages of NFTs. This type of market may attract potential NFT collectors. I don't have an answer. It would be a pity that fear of the unknown will miss this opportunity. Time is running out and technology waits for no one.

Seems to me, commissions provide artists better market to sell their illustrations. And a much better guarantee of authenticity. But who knows.

Go to your search engine and enter the phrase "NFT problems"

You will get all the info you need to make an informed decision.

That is all I will say here about that.

You know, Wendy, it's well-documented that Daz leadership loves, loves, LOVES the NFT scam. Doesn't matter that it's burning the biosphere. They don't care that it's a big scam. They're in it, and they're going to try to make all the money off it they possibly can. There's nothing we can do about it. Well, one thing: Boycott them.

If you're serious about the anti-NFT thing, here's what you do: Stop visiting their forums, stop buying their products, maybe even stop using and/or promoting anything they do. Pick a different 3D software and just call it a day with them until they stop with the NFT nonsense. And then advertise and promote what you're doing and why you're doing it. Make a social media campaign out of it and turn it into a movement.

You could just use Poser. I'm sure Rendo would appreciate that. Or see what the deal is with some other software. Actually, I know you're into a whole bunch of packages. You could easily walk away from Daz!

It's just a thought. But here's the truth: Complaining without doing something is just complaining.

I've read quite a lot about NFTs and Crypto in general, and from what I can gather, most of the news outlets - including tech news - think the whole concept is a solution looking for a problem.  It's not something I want to be bothered with but whatever floats yer boat.

Edited to add: There's also a big backlash against mining tokens of any nature, due to the huge environmental impact of the power used, and the associated shortages of high end gear used.
