Subject: Mac OS minimum

Catalina and Big Sur - all very well, but some of us have Mojave - and Poser 12 would be very welcome! I can't afford to get a new Mac, so I won't be buying Poser 12. Is it too much to ask for P12 to be compatible with Mojave?

The big problem with P12 on Mojave is the Firefly render. If you alter any setting (such as bucket size from 32 to 64) the image will render and then Poser12 locks up and force quit is required. So far I haven't encountered any other problems...

Sad to say I'm in the same lifeboat. My primary iMac runs macOS Sierra, and can't be upgraded beyond High Sierra, due to its age, but it was a top of the line, configured to order machine when purchased in 2011, so it still has tons of life left in it. My more recent (2013) iMac is less well provisioned, but at least will run Catalina, though not Big Sur.

I'm feeling rather deprived that I no longer have two systems that can run the same version of Poser, for Queue Rendering. If I run Windows 10 via Bootcamp or Parallels, then have no trouble running the latest Poser 12, but MS doesn't force obsolescence on its users' hardware the way Apple does.

So if the Mojave FF bug could get fixed that would be great.

Also, I’d go as far as to say essential is the other end of the scale Apple Silicon native support for Metal.

You don't have to get a brand new computer. I went for years using refurbished or used Macs and just upgraded the OS, which is a heck of a lot cheaper. I went and looked it up and these Macs can run the current Mojave OS. Chances are, they're much cheaper than a brand new computer. Just upgrade the parts or RAM and viola! Try to stay away from the Mac Minis. Nothing against them, but they're a bitch to get open and once you do, your warranty is voided.

MacBook (Early 2015 or newer)
MacBook Air (Mid 2012 or newer)
MacBook Pro (Mid 2012 or newer)
Mac mini (Late 2012 or newer)
iMac (Late 2012 or newer)
iMac Pro (2017)
Mac Pro (Late 2013; Mid 2010 and Mid 2012 models with recommended Metal-capable graphics cards)

Mojave is a few years old now, but still fine for many tasks including Poser. After Mojave came Catalina and the current Mac OS is Big Sur. I can run High Sierra, Mojave and Catalina on my current imain iMac from external SSD drives. It’s surprising how much faster the older OS’ are for general use when you switch between them. No render speed difference of course.

We are at an interesting point now given the speed of the new M1 Macs.

Basically using GeekBench it says a new M1 Mac Mini for £699 is roughly as fast as the iMac I bought 2 years ago for £4000, which is twice the speed of my 2013 iMac.

The new M1X or M2 Macs that will be released this year are likely to be at least twice as fast again - as they will likely be going from 4 performance cores (M1) to 8 performance cores at a minimum.

Still waiting for a reply from ThePowersThatBe about Mojave.

If they want my money, then I need Poser 12 to work with what I've got - which is Mojave and nothing after... Otherwise I can't have Poser 12 and they can't have money from me. Ditto for Poser 13, 14 etc...

Bye.

At some point, you have to let go of old technology.

The user base that uses Mojave will steadily decrease - it will never increase.

In which case, since I am very short of funds, I shall just have to do without for a while.
