You can use the same method bagginsbill used for caustic lights here: https://www.renderosity.com/rr/mod/forumpro/?thread_id=2946041
In short, do the same thing you would do in real life: put a filter in front of your light! Apply your mask image that you already have to a square plane with transparency, and position it in front of the light. It will just take a little more trial and error to get everything aligned with the plane the right distance from the light so that the symbol is the size you want.
Note that the shadow blur radius part doesn't seem to be working currently (or at least not consistently). If you want a sharp-edged symbol, that's fine. If you want it soft-edged, you can use an area light instead of a spot, just be aware that the light intensity falls off pretty fast from area lights so you may need to turn the intensity way, way up. (Maybe you can prevent this by setting Distance Start for the light very high? haven't tried it.)

Thank you so much. I'll try that out here in a few hours. You rock.

I'm trying to basically make a batsymbol to project from a spotlight for a render. With Firefly I can create a spotlight, and add the texture to the color output of the spotlight and project it. But when I do this on Superfly it basically blacks out the light.
I was wondering if anyone knew of a way to make it work with Superfly.
Thanks, and sorry for the noob question, been working on this for a few hours trying to make it work
