In MD9 and some earlier versions you could export topstitches as geometry. Topstitch geometry is a drag regarding model number of polygons but it looks perfect and you may consider it if you want to make items for close-up use.
MD10 does no longer export stitch geometry. This is not a bug. It is done on purpose, and of course this was not communicated. I just had confirmation to this end from MD support. The FBX export includes a normal map with the stitches burned in. This means you need to color the stitches with the whole texture, and of course you are doomed when you change textures outside MD.
One way to solve this could be to save a texture where the stitches are pure white and the fabric pure black. This would create a mask for the topstitches. Will have to try this out.
But of course this is just another reason to keep your MD9 alive.
