Subject: Superfly meshlight modification for Urban Future 2

seachnasaigh ( ) posted Thu, 24 December 2020 at 2:16 PM · edited Wed, 17 April 2024 at 2:27 AM

If you have Stonemason's Urban Future 2 (released Feb 2009), I've adapted it as a Superfly meshlight lightcaster and set up the metals in PhysicalSurface root node. I "turned on the lights" in some of the windows, and all of the neon/LED signs now cast light.

Urban Future 2 P12 Superfly meshlight modification 5e

It was done in P12, but should work in P11; I made a few test renders in Firefly IDL, and it's usable, but the lightcasting is not as good. This model is good for Blade Runner style scenes. :D Here some P12 Superfly test renders:

Ooops, that pic above shows the logo on the mugs. Here are some seats with logos:

Weyland-Yutani is from Alien/Prometheus; Umbrella is from Resident Evil; Atlantis is from Stargate Atlantis. The logos are metallic, so they will appear bright or dark depending on the angle from which light hits them.

I didn't know there was an interior room in this set.

Looks amazing. Makes me want to buy the Urban Future bundle, which has been on my wish list forever, and is on sale today.

I didn't know there was an interior room in this set.

There isn't; there is only a short hallway within that exterior door. I added the room, and some hallway off one of the parking garages, and the ceiling light fixtures. The freebie pack is mostly a re-material job, but it also has the added pieces. I'll likely pack up the office furnishings as another freebie.

Similar treatment for Urban SciFi, aka Urban Future 1 (released in P5/P6 era). P12 renders:

By the cringe, mate; those are superb. Well, apart from the bleedin' 'orrible low res figures, which rather let things down somewhat. But the sets themselves... amazing.

That cutie in the room is Loretta, I suppose. The coffee machine and glasses look so good.
Sure, this looks great. I had seen this upload on ShareCG.Wondering if I should get it, since I don't own Urban Future but I think that it is worth having it anayway as a starter for getting deeper into Superfly.

Thanks, @SamTherapy :D Yeh, the low res dolls (Lorenzo and Loretta) are only there to provide scale and some context; their fingers are square cross-section! :P Having a doll in the scene is how I noticed that the building3 apartment's floor was too low to allow for looking out at the city.

@yarp, I will hopefully find time to pack up the furnishings separately. Most were originally made in situ for other sets (several from the Atlantis gate room, the mugs from TinkerBell's Drive-In Cafe'), and I made new prop files so that they now load at 0/0/0.

I've loaded Urban Future 3 (306,798 polys!) into Silo, and see that the buildings' bottoms are at greatly differing Y levels, so that using a flat ground plane would either partially bury some buildings, or leave some buildings hanging in mid-air. I think Stonemason had in mind only camera shots up higher, where you wouldn't see the ground. I'm working on a terrain fitted to the buildings; in this Silo screenshot you can see two road tunnel entrances (Silo guy shown for scale). The tunnels will have interior lighting.

UF3 ground screenshot 1.jpg

In this shot, I had to keep the ground at the base of the buildings at left and right high because that's where the bottom of their mesh stops, but I didn't want to bury four stories of the background building. That building has just blank wall at the bottom, so to give a reason for the drop-away terrain, I overlaid a garage door onto it.

Some Urban Future 3 renders (P12 Superfly):

To satisfy @SamTherapy, I used some full res dolls :P; here Roxie arrives at Cafe' L'Homme, and is escorted by Rex.
