Hi, does anyone know how to do a showroom car paint material?

Trepz posted Sat, 24 May 2008 at 1:12 AM

There is some neat pearlescent ones in the free stuff section here under Vue/Materials(;

BountifulKnight has an awesome AutoMat set here in the MP.

I have one you can have, it's a single layer but renders very fast. set-up mostly for HDRI rendering.

Hi chrispoole, where can I get your material? The free pearlescent ones in the free section are nice but they are not the one I'm looking for. Thanks.

Here's a material you can use. Take it apart and see how it was created. Most realistic car renders get highlights from the REFLECTIONS, not the SPECULAR HIGHLIGHT. So, a good HDRI map is important :-)

Or, as in the scene above you can use a luminous lightbox object (not light panel) above the scene and reflect it off the top of the object-- like they do in the real world.

Check it again...I've tweaked it for better reflections.

Hi jquin3,

I was going to put it on cgshare but it's a very tiny file, so if you still need it, I could e-mail it to you, just site mail me with your address.
I forgot to mention that I set it up to be used in conjunction with a texture map,  but should work with a solid colour.

Cheers
Chris

@Chipp I get this error message if I load your material?

Hi Mazak,

Hmmm. I was viewing oher paint textures, and in particular their filter settings, but did not use any of them in the version I rolled. I suspect this is a bug of Vue, where if you even load a mat and cancel, some 'reminants' of the copy protection remain. I'll remake from scratch and re-post.

best,
Chipp

chippwalters posted Sat, 31 May 2008 at 11:50 AM

OK, Try it now.

BTW, I should mention, the Cobra paint is very nice as well, but it doesn't have the dual layer model which the one I posted does.

Basically, a car finish is made up of two layers: a metallic paint color and a gloss coat applied over it. You can download the new version from the existing link. Sorry about the inconvenience.

Looks good. Try putting this lightbox object above it (out of the camera's view) and see how it looks then?

Mazak posted Sat, 31 May 2008 at 5:08 PM

I added a reflection map to your shader but it didn't work so well.

With your light prop (Thank you) the reflections are better, but the windscreen glass is complete white. Any ideas?

That's what glass does when it's lit from above.  I guess you could fiddle around with the reflection settings a bit or move the lightbox slightly

You can try adjusting the light box's Luminous value to something smaller and see how it works. But, by adjusting it lower you may have to add more reflection to the underlying paint layer of the car to continue creating a decent reflection.

chippwalters posted Sat, 31 May 2008 at 9:35 PM

Here are a couple more materials for you to play with.
The first is a higher glossy car paint, which uses a modified angle of incident function which creates a more 'glossy' paint which reflects even better.

The second is a modified Glass which you can actually adjust the reflectance using the reflections tab. Using these two mats should allow you to create the render you want-- hopefully!

Hi chipp, I downloaded all your car materials and think they're great. One link however is dead I think. "http://www.gadgetplugins.com/chippstuff/CW_CarPaintGlossy.mat". Could you check it out? Thanks.

Also, in your render of the red rocket ship, did you use the hdri map as your reflection map as well or is the light box the only reflection?  What hdri map did you use for that? I'm trying to look for a similar map (i really dont like the sky maps for car materials).

Mazak posted Sun, 01 June 2008 at 2:09 AM

Good Morning :) Thank you for the new materials, Chipp :) I try it later. Here is my next attempt (render over night) I used 3 of your light props.

Here's the mats  used on the C3D Cobra.

Great render Chipp! Maybe the highlights are too big in size?

Here is my next attempt. I want to achieve the effect like the promo pictures from the_hankster here at Renderosity and DAZ. He has razor-sharp highlights on his pictures.

I modified your shader to come close to that effect. I added some more chrome also.

Very impressive Chipp !

Are these renders using you interior pak settings ?

chippwalters posted Mon, 02 June 2008 at 2:38 PM

Nope. For the first one I used a standard GA atmosphere with fog and sky settings to black so to 'kill' the horizon. The second one I used the Chrome Studio environment map that comes with Vue and Global Ambience. Both used the lightbox object floating over the car, just out of scene. The ground is almost black, with a little bit of blurred reflection.

HTH, Chipp
