I loved these things. They were the precurser of today's Legos. I tried to get my mother to buy me a can whenever we went to the store. And used to build things like rocketships and planes.

Back when cap guns looked like the real thing. I had guns that looked like both of these and they shot caps.

image.png

image.png

And then it dawned on me... some of these youngsters probably don't even know what caps are!

These are caps. I don't even think they make them any more. They came in boxes that looked like this:

image.png

And in rolls inside the boxes.

image.png

P>S>: I just looked on Wikipedia. They still make caps, but they look different.

This doesn't really have anything to do with toys, per se, but Bagginsbill's last post about throwing lawn darts at people's heads reminded me of this story from my childhood.

I grew up in an area of Raleigh, NC called Walnut Terrace. I found some pictures of some of the buildings before they tore them down years ago. Remember those, and look at the roofs.

image.png

Well, when I was about 5 or 6 years old. Two of my favorite cartoons was Mighty Mouse and Underdog. I liked Superman too, but I don't remember him being in a cartoon at the time. Anyway, like any true little idiot at the time, I would imagine flying with a towel wrapped around my neck. But, and I didn't know this at the time, I couldn't actually fly. But, I thought, if I could just get enough height , I could jump off something and fly under my own power.

Now looking back at the pictures, all the apartments had a porch and all the porches had bannisters and handrails. I would climb up on top of them and jump. I got some distance, but still not high enough I thought. Back when I was a kid, those smaller roofs weren't there. They must have built them long after I moved away. Any, they were flat when I was a kid and filled with rocks. I actually used to climb up there sometimes. One time with a towel. And yes, I jumped. I was a kid though and really didn't hurt myself. But.. I mused.... if I could just get more height. and I looked up to the very top roof.

I know what you're thinking. Why ain't I dead? I could never figure out how to get on the very top roof.

I had many of those, or rather, the British version, Action Man. The Space capsule in the Brit version wasn't glow in the dark, though; it was a slightly metallic grey. The figure's head was slightly different from the US version, too. Most of the equipment and uniforms were the US types, although there were some unique to the UK.

I still have my old GIJoes from the 70's I have the Mercury space capsule, jeep, Seawolf submarine, two 6 wheeled off road vehicles. One Joe with Kung-Fu grip and a beard, two clean shaven Joes and African-American Joe. Also have Steve Austin and his space suit and ship and Oscar Goldman. The later 70's Joes shifted away from the military theme to Adventure Team because nobody liked the Vietnam war.

Funny thing, I always thought Star Trek was a rip off of Voyage, even though it was pitched as "Wagon Train to the stars".

Voyage to the bottom of the Sea, was one of Irwin Allen's Babies. But it pre-dated Star Trek. It was a rip-off of the Movie by the same name. Even had the same characters.

Yup, I know. I was a fan of 'em both as a kid. I thought Trek was basically the same show in space.

I had a model Seaview, not a kit, a complete model with a working light at the front. My cousin gave me the Voyage Annual one Christmas, too.

Okay, who had HO scale train sets when they were a kid? I have to confess, I always wanted one, but my mother couldn't afford it for me. Howver, when I reached my twenties and started working on my own, guess what I eventually did? I not only bought a set, I made a whole damn town. :)
